The Kenyan Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MOEST)
In 2005, the ministry underwent a reorganization and created a full division named Special Needs Education, which is headed by a deputy director of education, who works with two assistant directors and four education officers.

According to MOEST, the SNE Division has the following responsibilities:

*Coordination and administration of special schools, units, integrated programmes and other institutions for disabled children

*Oversight of the Educational Assessment and Resource Services (EARS)

*Appointment of Board of Governors for Special Schools and Institutes

*Allocation and disbursement of funds to special institutions

*Coordination of recruitment of residential students for the Diploma Course in Special Education at the Kenya Institute of Special Education (KISE)

*Creation of awareness and sensitization on issues pertaining to children with special needs.

*Facilitation of clearance of imported specialized equipment and goods destined to special institutions.

The Physically Handicapped
The Mentally Handicapped
Cerebral Palsy
Autism

The Kenya Institute of Education (KIE)
KIE develops curricula for special needs education programmes and prepares other educational materials. It also researches and evaluates special needs education.

The Kenya Institute of Special Education (KISE)
The Kenyan Institute of Special Education (KISE) trains teachers for special needs education. For more information, click here.

The Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC)
KNEC uses develops, adapts, and oversees national examinations for special needs candidates.
