In 2006, Deaf Aid (a registered INGO in Kenya) began working to create the Kenya Deaf Resource Centre. This Resource Centre is envisioned to be a major conduit of information for the Deaf community in Kenya. The KDRC's current main features include: general information about deafness and deafness in Kenya; an events calendar; an interactive forum with deaf Kenyan moderators; and news related to local and global Deaf issues.
In the short-term, Deaf Aid will train members of the Deaf community to moderate forums, suggest edits, and provide information about ongoing events related to the field of deafness. After sufficient training and capacity building has been completed, the KDRC will be completely maintained and operated by members of the Deaf community.
To implement this project, Deaf Aid staff visited numerous stakeholders in the Deaf community, collected available resources, and, in some cases, conducted interviews to gather information. From December 2006 - January 2007, these materials were summarized, edited, and rewritten for publication on the Internet. At the same time, technical staff began developing the design, layout, and format of the web page.
Members of the Deaf community met in February 2007 and reviewed the materials before they were published, offering suggestions and revisions where necessary.
This web site is still a work-in-progress. Please provide your feedback in our forums or by email.
